Laser Removal of Stretch Marks a Viable Treatment Option

One of the most hated imperfections on the human body is the stretch mark. They can be unsightly with gnarly reddish purple colored striations in the skin when fresh and a whitish silvery color when aged. These pose no health risk but many people feel as if their stretch marks were like the proverbial scarlet letter burning into their skin. With laser removal of stretch marks, these people have a fighting chance at a more normal appearance.

Stretch marks are found on the abdomen, upper arm area, thighs, lower back and hips. Pregnancy and voluminous weight loss are the two primary causes of stretch marks. These occur when the skin’s elasticity is stretched beyond its capability and therefore tears that skin layer. The collagen and elastin in the skin breaks down and turns the purplish red color in the beginning when the tear is fresh and “heals” into the faded white color.

Laser Removal of Stretch Marks Makes a Difference

There is some dissention as to whether or not laser removal of stretch marks actually makes a difference in the appearance of these unsightly areas. Early laser treatments may not have made much of a dent in the appearance of stretch marks. However, there are newer techniques and technology which makes laser removal of stretch marks very much a viable option.

The lasers are used to excise the old scarred tissue away first before concentrating on the kick start of new tissue growth. With laser removal of stretch marks, the lasers essentially fuel the fire for new growth of collagen, a building block of the skin. The energy from the laser is absorbed through the affected skin area, jump starting the collagen which, over time, will help fill in the old scar areas.

Cost and Recovery Time of Laser Removal of Stretch Marks

As mentioned before, new technology and techniques have been developed for the laser removal of stretch marks. And as this technology has been used with success for several years, the costs have started coming down. While definitely cheaper than plastic surgery, the cost of laser removal of stretch marks may be out of reach of some of the population and it is not covered by insurance.

Luckily for many patients with good credit, financing can be obtained or a payment plan arranged for the laser removal of stretch marks. While there some recovery time needed for this laser therapy, it is much less that actual surgery. Of course, do not expect miracles overnight as it will take some time for the collagen to build up and start repairing the skin.
